Design Manifesto
A librarian is going about his daily business in the library when one particular book catches his attention. It would appear that the librarian and the library are more closely linked than it being just his job when the book shows itself to be interacting with the Librarian.
The design sensibility is realistic but with exaggerated features in terms of the puppets body, especially in his hands. The librarian is to look like he is part of the library, his skin will appear papery and book-like. His clothes are old and well-worn. His facial features will be set in a serious position and without movement. His posture is very bad and he is hunched over revealing just quite how old he is. The library is a dark and atmospheric place with key set pieces to suggest that it is a library but with a black backdrop which suggests that it is quite a dreamy landscape and perhaps not real. The colour palette is muted and drab on elements such as the chair but in terms of the books on the bookcase they will be rich vibrant colours which should look like they have dulled with time. There will be a range of real textures as the fabrication of this film is highly important; it will be a crafted and tactile world that appears to be old and lived in and have a history within itself. The librarian is aimed at adults and children alike. It is a fantasy story with undertones of hope and happiness. |
